Today we had a visit from environmentalist and artist, Gordon Darcy. He did nature drawing workshops with all pupils in the school, starting with the junior classes who drew ladybirds, fish and snails!
After break, the senior classes went on a field trip to Ross Abbey to look at the natural environment around the friary. They were also lucky enough to see a fox and a hare in the fields! When they came back they also had an art workshop, and drew some of the things they had seen on their excursion!

We were delighted to have Catherine Seale and Mick Kane, Galway and Mayo Community Water Officers, and Philip White, a local angler, visit our school today. We had a great presentation about our local water catchement area, local rivers and lakes, and even local holy wells! We also talked about some of the wildlife - aquatic, ground-dwelling, insect and bird - that we might see in our area. We had a discussion about the problems humans can generate, like having farm animals in local streams, pollution, and plastic and litter issues. We saw samples of some plastics that were washed up on nearby beaches, as well as examples of shells and fly fishing lures.
While the junior classes were having a talk with Catherine, the senior classes took a walk down to the old bog road - Sandybanks Lane - and Mick and Phil showed us how they do kick samples to look at the quality of local water. We saw real shrimp, snails, fish, bugs and even a leech! We also looked at some lichens, algae and plants and trees that grow near the stream, and that can tell us about the health of our environment.
We loved our visit, and can't wait to do more research and trips around local waterways!
We had such lovely weather outside today that some of the Senior Infants decided it was the perfect opportunity to do some litter picking. We used our new tabbards from An Taisce, as well as the great gloves they sent us. Kids from every class joined in, and our yard is looking spotless now! Click 'Read More' to see more of our photos!
Two thirds of the way through our senior classes' Power Hour already! This week we focused on Reports as a writing genre, reading topic, spelling list and planning tool. We came up with some very creative ideas for reports - even some crazy inventions from the future! Follow the 'Read More' link to see extra photos.
We would love to accept any photos or videos from parents and families, if you would like to add them to our website. Feel free to drop them into the office on a USB stick or CD, or you can email them to the school (firstname.lastname@example.org).
